Texture Explorations - June 9-13, 2025
This is a five day, hands on workshop with a focus on texture tools and surface pattern play. Before Sarah makes a slab pot, she makes the texture tools. This is the behind the scenes part of her process. She has spent many years researching and practicing her unique surface design techniques and will demonstrate just how she does it - from initial design on paper to stamp blanks and texture roller blanks, to carving and refining, to stamping and rolling, Sarah will take students on a deep dive into what it takes to texture a pot. Students will explore stamp-making and carving, texture roller making and carving, card cutouts, pattern design, repeat patterns and more. This workshop will primarily focus on the tool-making and surface pattern aspects of slabbuilding, but students will make simple cups, tiles and/or plates as canvases for pattern and texture exploration.
Tuition: 2000.00 USD (includes materials, instruction, lunches. Does not include accommodation)

Join Sarah in her home studio and learn from a gal who is obsessed with slab building design and techniques and has years of slab building design under her belt. In this course, Sarah will demonstrate a variety of slab techniques to create a myriad of forms. FRANK ARTS VIRTUAL WORKSHOP RECORDING: TEXTURE ROLLERS WITH SARAH PIKE
Stamped surfaces can be accomplished in so many different ways. You can stamp one stamp at a time to cover a surface, allowing you to mix and match. But what if you had a large surface you wanted to cover with a single wrap-around image? And what if you wanted that image to be embossed (raised) versus debossed (imprinted into the surface)?
In this follow-up workshop to Sarah’s Making Your Own Stamps, she demonstrates how she thinks about and engineers her texture rollers. Topics will include the construction and surface of the roller, how to make them the sizes you want, and testing them before bisque firing. Learn more and register to watch this recording here.
